UNIVERSAL ACCOUNT NUMBER, UAN

Universal Account Number

The Universal Account Number (UAN) is a unique and special 12-digit number assigned to every employee contributing to the Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF) in India. The EPFO allocates this number to streamline the Provident Fund (PF) management system and simplify the tracking of employee contributions and benefits across different employers.

UAN is designed to link multiple Member Identification Numbers (Member IDs) that an individual may have received from different employers over their career. When an employee changes jobs and joins a new establishment, they are required to provide their existing UAN to the new employer. The new employer then links the new Member ID to the existing UAN. This ensures continuity in the employee’s PF account and facilitates portability. UAN also provides employees with easy access to their PF account information.
